I'm Dave, the maker behind Elegant Crafted.

I've always enjoyed figuring out how things work, solving problems, and turning an idea into something real. Sometimes that means creating a personalized piece of hardwood. Sometimes it means designing a part that doesn't exist anymore. And sometimes it means teaching a home to do something automatically that it couldn't do before.

Different projects. Same goal: build something useful, well-designed, and made specifically for you.

From Engineering to the Workshop

Before I started building the things you see here, I spent more than four decades working as a Software Systems Engineer in a demanding hospital environment.

That career taught me something that has stayed with me ever since:

Details matter.

When you're working with complex systems, small mistakes can have big consequences. You learn to think through a problem, understand how the pieces fit together, test your work, and make sure the finished solution actually does what it's supposed to do.

I bring that same mindset into my workshop.

Whether I'm designing a 3D-printed part, creating an engraved cutting board, or building a Home Assistant automation, I don't just want it to look good.

I want it to work.

Where Technology Meets Craftsmanship

Elegant Crafted isn't limited to one type of project.

I enjoy working where traditional craftsmanship and modern technology come together.

Custom Woodworking

I create personalized cutting boards, signs, gifts, and other wood projects from quality hardwoods such as walnut, cherry, and maple.

The goal isn't to make something that looks like everything else.

It's to make something that belongs to you.

From a family name or special date to a Realtor's logo or a completely custom idea, each piece is created around the person or purpose behind it.

Custom 3D Printing

Not every project starts with a finished design.

Sometimes you have a broken part, a rough sketch, a photograph, a measurement, or simply an idea in your head.

That's where the engineering side of my experience comes in.

Using CAD design and modern 3D printing, I can help turn an idea into a functional part, prototype, accessory, enclosure, organizer, or one-of-a-kind creation.

Smart Home & Automation

I also build custom smart-home solutions using technology such as Home Assistant.

Instead of simply installing another smart device, I look at the problem you're trying to solve.

Maybe you want your lights to respond automatically when someone enters a room.

Maybe you want an alert when a door is left open.

Maybe you want different devices and systems throughout your home to work together.

The technology is the tool.

The solution is what matters.

Why Custom?

There are plenty of places to buy something off the shelf.

Sometimes that's exactly what you need.

But sometimes the thing you need doesn't exist.

Or the version that does exist isn't quite right.

That's where custom work makes sense.

A custom project gives us the opportunity to start with your needs, rather than trying to make your needs fit somebody else's product.

That's what I enjoy most.

Taking an idea and figuring out how to make it real.

Built With Care

I don't run a large production shop.

That's intentional.

Every project that comes through Elegant Crafted gets personal attention from me.

I review the details, consider the materials and methods, and look for problems before they become problems.

For woodworking, that means paying attention to the character and grain of the wood.

For 3D printing, it means considering fit, strength, function, and how a part will actually be used.

For automation, it means thinking about what should happen, when it should happen, and what happens when something doesn't go as expected.

The project may be small. The attention to detail isn't.

More Than a Product

When you order something from Elegant Crafted, you're not ordering from a factory or choosing from a giant catalog.

You're working directly with the person designing and making your project.

That means you can explain what you're trying to accomplish, ask questions, make changes, and work through the details together.

And if you have an idea but aren't sure exactly how to make it happen, that's okay.

That's often the most interesting part.
